'Messi'ah Retires. International Football will never be the same.
The spectators gazed upon him as he started his run-up to take the first penalty shoot for his team. The pressure increased exponentially as the captain advanced towards the ball. “Ohh he’s missed it!” Yelled the commentator as the angry fans were left in dismay, while they never knew, it was the last time they saw their hero in that jersey.
The Chile fans on the other side were clearly relieved to have avoided their biggest threat present on that turf. But the Argentina fans weren’t very happy with the captain’s performance there. Consequently Messi lead boys lost the final of the Copa America to Chile in the penalty shoot-out following a 0-0 score at the end of 120 minutes
The reaction of the crowd was however just a gist of how the missed penalty turned against the very person who was compared to Legends like Pele or Maradona. The Internet surely lost it over the fact that this was Messi’s fourth final defeat in a major tournament, and the never ending war between Messi and Ronaldo fans kicked off again.
The social media flooded with criticism within blink of an eye and the Legend himself seemed to be quite disappointed by this loss. The next we heard – “Messi announces retirement from international football.” This came as a shock to everybody associated to football in the slightest way.
The Footballer with his name on uncountable records and trophies, as Argentina’s or Barcelona F.C’s main forward with the latest one being – ‘The most number of international goals by an Argentine’ is no less than a superstar to a sports lover.
Messi was a young football prodigy and he sticked to the same club (Barcelona F.C) where he was said to be the world’s highest paid footballer for 5 out of six years between 2009 and 2014 with an average earnings of about 55-60 million euros.
Having had all the fame and respect a football player could ever dream of, a setback made the Argentine skipper end his international career. “For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, It hurts not to be a champion.” He added as he announced his retirement just 2 days past his birthday in New-Jersey and Footbal changes forever!
